Morton’s Neuroma
A Neuroma is when a nerve becomes thickened due to irritation and compression. A Morton’s Neuroma is when this occurs on the nerves that run between the toes of the feet. This leads to sensations of numbness, tingling, pins and needles, burning and shooting pain around the toe areas. This condition is most common in middle aged women and can occur in flat feet and high arched feet.
The main causes include standing for long periods at work or high intensity sporting exercises. Narrow shoes with heels can also aggravate the condition.
Treatment includes wider shoewear, foot mobilisation to improve joint range of motion, dry needling to reduce muscle tightness around the area and custom orthotics to take pressure off the nerve area. Surgery should only be considered as a last resort when all conservative treatment has not worked. This involves physical removal of the affected nerve.
