Bunion discomfort or pain

What is it?

A bunion forms when the big toe angles towards the second toe, causing a ‘bump’ that forms on the side of the big toe. The main causes of bunions include family history, footwear and wear and tear.

Symptoms

Bunions can cause two types of pain-rubbing due to footwear or inside the joint. Pain caused by rubbing in shoes occurs only in closed footwear and can cause redness in area or callus build up. Pain inside the joint occurs with or without shoes and is worsened with longer walks or exercise.

What to do

Bunions can be diagnosed by our Podiatrist and they can assist you with advice on footwear, correction of biomechanical problems with orthotics, joint mobilisations to relieve pain and improve movement.
Structural deformity can only be corrected by surgery, which we try to avoid unless it is causing excessive pain.

If you’re living or working in Hammond Park, Success, Aubin Grove, Atwell or Cockburn see Kevin at Atwell Podiatry for treatment of your bunion pain.
